Pumpkin Picking

This October our Forest School group went pumpkin picking to celebrate the joys of Autumn! We started our visit with a story, each choosing a pumpkin to sit on! The children were enthralled with reading "Pick a Pumpkin" amongst the beautiful pumpkins, and it introduced wonderfully what we were about to do. The children each chose a wheelbarrow, and set of in search of their perfect pumpkin. We talked about size, shape, colours and learnt lots of new vocabulary as we explored the pumpkins. Once we had found the right pumpkin, we each weighed our pumpkins using the scales, and once we knew the weight the children independently pushed their wheelbarrows to pay. They really enjoyed being independent and paying for their own pumpkins, engaging in some lovely conversations with the lady at the till!

Before returning back to nursery to carve our pumpkins, we practiced some climbing along the hay bales!

Once back at Nursery we will be:

  • Making pumpkin soup and sharing it with our friends alongside the story book

  • Printing with different sized pumpkins and squash in the paint and exploring repeating patterns and ordering by size

  • Story telling with our own "Pumpkin Fairies" and small world resources

  • Counting and sorting with pumpkin seeds

  • Baking our own pumpkin cake

  • Decorating our pumpkins .
